THE STORY OF ISAGER
The Danish company Isager has since 1977 been supplying patterns and quality yarns made from natural and sustainable fibers, both known and loved by knitters the world over. The founder of Isager, Marianne Isager, and her daughter and co-owner of the company Helga Isager, are behind a line of popular knitting books and individual patterns.
The history of Isager began with designer Åse Lund Jensen (1920-1977), who established her studio in 1960. Åse Lund Jensen’s work was rooted in the Danish crafts tradition, but she took her inspiration in particular from the Icelandic and Faroe Islands’ knitting cultures. In cooperation with Henrichsen’s Yarn Mill Åse Lund Jensen made a range of high quality woolen yarns and her own favorites Spinni and Jensen Yarn are still part of Isager’s range today.
Åse Lund Jensen was a pioneer in her field and throughout her career she worked continuously to get knitting recognized as a craft, amongst other things through her many exhibitions and her work as a teacher at Skals Håndarbejdsskole, today known as Skals – Højskolen for Design og Håndarbejde (Skals – School of Design and Crafts). It was here that Marianne Isager and Åse Lund Jensen met and founded their friendship. After the death of Åse Lund Jensen this friendship led to Marianne Isager taking over the rights to use Åse Lund Jensen’s eternally modern patterns.
Since 1977 first Marianne and later Helga developed the company in cooperation with many talented designers and staff in Isager.
Henrichsen’s mill in Skive is still very important, but Isager now also sells selected yarns from Peru, Italy, Ireland and Japan. The yarns and patterns are sold in selected shops in Denmark and internationally. Most sales goes directly to the shops, but the Japanese market is serviced by Isager Japan.
Q&A WITH STORE MANAGER BIRGIT GEHL ØSTERGAARD-JENSEN
Birgit learned to knit long before she started school, and she is truly in her element at Isager, whether she is advising customers or developing new designs.
Customer relations are very important to Birgit, and of course, she has both a favourite yarn and a favourite colour.
Q: How long have you worked at Isager?
A: I first joined Isager in 1989. During the winter months, I worked with yarn packaging for Marianne Isager, while in the summer I ran a small shop near Tversted Strand.

After that, I spent several years teaching creative subjects to adults before moving on to a position with the company Pilebyg, where I worked in administration, still connected to craft and design. Four years ago, I returned to Isager to take on the day-to-day management of the Isager store.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your role as a knitting advisor?
A: It is important to me that every customer leaves with a project that truly suits them. I enjoy meeting people face to face and helping them choose colours, textures, and silhouettes.
Sometimes I encourage customers to step outside their comfort zone when it comes to colour choices, but the most important thing is that they are happy with their project.
Q: What are you knitting at the moment?
A: I am currently working on the design of a V-neck sweater in Isager Merilin and Mulberry Silk. It is knitted sideways and features a wide striped texture. From time to time, I also work on a Driftwood, and I always have a Triangle Shawl on the go – it takes up almost no space in my handbag.
Q: Do you have a favourite yarn or colour?
A: I am particularly fond of Spinni. Despite being a single-ply yarn with a very fine wool thread, it has remarkable structure and durability. It is lightweight, holds its shape beautifully, and provides wonderful warmth.
Col 10, which I am holding in my arms in the photograph, is my favourite colour. I knitted my very first sweater in Jensen col 10 when I was 14 years old, and it is a shade I continue to return to. Back then, in 1974, the yarn was called ÅLJ, as it was still produced under Åse Lund Jensen’s name. 1974 was also the year Åse and Marianne met for the very first time.
Stop by the Isager store and receive expert knitting advice from Birgit. You might even be inspired to knit something in the magical col 10.
